Feeding sows

During the lives of sows, there are three basic periods that can be distinguished:

• The first one - from the moment of weaning to mating
• The second one - gestation period
• The third one - lactation period

The demand of the sows' organism for nutrients differs in respective periods of their lives. Thus, taking into consideration these differences, DOSSCHE specialists have created fodders that fully cover the organism's needs. For feeding sows and getters we produce the granular mix No. 38, loose mix No. 39 and 15% concentrate No. 86. For loose and farrowing sows there is a dedicated feeding, dosed according to the system developed by DOSSCHE nutritionists.

In the first day since piglets' weaning - 0 kg/day. Limiting the food dose to zero in this day has the purpose of drying off a sow and quickening its return to estrus. We use mix No. 40, No. 41 or concentrate No. 88.

In the second day since mating - 4 kg/day. This quantity of fodder will enable faster regeneration of a sow's organism, better demonstrated estrus and better and more plentiful ovulation, thus maximizing the litters. In this period we may use mix No. 40 or concentrate No. 88.

In the third day since mating - 1,8 - 2,0 kg/day. This will give more plentiful litters due to better implantation of inseminated eggs. We provide fodder No. 40, 41 or concentrate No. 88.

Between 4th day and 10th week of gestation - 2.5 kg/day. This is the period of limited organism's demand for nutrients. However, it is possible to increase the dose for the sows which are too thin, or for the ones which are older and fatter. The dose for the sows which are too fat, should be reduced. In autumn-winter period, in poorly isolated, under heated and cold buildings, the dose should be increased to 0.5 kg/day. We may use mix No. 40, No. 41 or concentrate No. 88.

10th to 16th week - 3 kg/day. It is the period of the most intensive foetuses' growth (70%). Increasing the food dose to 3.0 kg/day, we obtain more equalized litters, more vital, bigger and healthier piglets. We should use mix No. 40, No. 41 or concentrate No. 88.

The last four days before farrowing - 0.5 kg of fodder + 1.0 kg of wheat bran/day. The purpose of limiting the dose before farrowing is to facilitate the process, in addition to reducing the risk of MMA syndrome. We should use mix No. 40, No. 41 or concentrate No. 88. In the day of farrowing, from the same aforementioned reasons, a sow should not be given any food.

The first five days after farrowing:

• 1st day - 0.5 kg/day
• 2nd day - 1.5 kg/day
• 3rd - 5th day - increasing by 1.0 kg/day, every day

We should use mix No. 40, No. 41 or concentrate No. 88.

Since the sixth day of lactation period, we may feed sows and their piglets at will, or 2.0 kg + 0.4 kg of fodder per piglet, e.g.

A sow 2.0 kg + 10 piglets 10 x 0.4 kg = 6 kg of fodder/day. The rich feeding of sows in this period prevents the decline in their condition, body mass, ensures better lactation, thus resulting in better growth and condition of piglets. The sows, fed in this way, easier return to estrus. We should use mix No. 40, No. 41 or concentrate No. 88.
